First settled in 1826, the township of Young has grown from a humble sheep station to the thriving regional centre we see today.

Rich in history and character, the area was catapulted to forefront of Colonial New South Wales with the discovery of gold in 1860. This precious metal proved to be an important catalyst in the development of Young and the surrounding area.

Originally reserved for lambing ewes, the area was first known as ‘Lambing Flat’ because of its well-sheltered valley with reliable water supply. The tranquil valley remained as such for 34 years until 1860, when gold was discovered. Within 12 months, more than 20,000 miners were busily engaged, extracting the precious metal from the rich red earth. Scattered throughout the diggings were some 2,000 Chinese miners.

The European miners deeply resented the Chinese and in 1861, riots began with the Chinese being driven from the fields time and time again. The riots were so violent and widespread that soldiers conducted a public reading of the Riot Act on 14th July 1861, this is reputed to be the only official reading in New South Wales’ history.
